Abstract

|
Pretibial myxedema is a condition in which there is local thickening of the skin by a mucin-like deposit; it is nearly always associated with ophthalmopathy and with past or present hyperthyroidism. The long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) has been considered to act as pathogenetic role in hyperthyroidism, ophthalmopathy and pretibial myxedema. But many aspects are unanswered now. Recently some evidences of cell-mediated immunity are accumulated related to the pathogenesis of Graves¢¥ disease. A 52 years old man¢¥ with the history of Graves¢¥ -disease, treated 19 years ago by partial thyroidectomy and there after by radioidin, now in the state of hypothyroidism, was found. to have the pretibial myxedema. This in the second report of this disorder in Korea, where this incidence is thought unusually low.
